Wednesday 25th December- Christmas Day *** walk

We slept in then read for a while and didn’t really get up until about 10! We could hear the bells on the church and the water rushing past in the river:) Got up and had breakfast and then unfortunately it started raining which knocked going for a walk like yesterday on the head Unbeknown to Mag, I had decided to do Secret Santa for both of us and came round from the boot in my onesie carrying a black bag of presents – what a sight:) I got us both a much needed pair of walking boot style trainers and some bits and pieces for Mag. She thought it was a wonderful surprise as really the holiday is our present to each other:) We also opened presents from Tracey and Mandy. Had Xmas music on all day. As it was still raining Mag entertained herself by decorating the whole van from the wrapping paper, including paper chains! We had cold beef sandwiches with pickles followed by mince pies. Read for a while then just before 4 it stopped raining and we went for a really long walk around the village and ski stations of Sixt. It definitely looks like the rain has fallen as snow at a higher level but probably not enough to make a big difference to the skiing as yet:( It was lovely to see into the windows of the chalets at people sitting by their fires with their xmas tree lights glittering and in one case a family sitting down to eat having just popped the champagne cork and cheering! We also saw a girl playing the euphonium complete with sheet music for her family’s entertainment! We are soooooo nosey but are loving our van – everyone should do it! Popped into the village souvenir shop (with beautiful friendly border collie) and got some xmas bits and bobs at bargain prices. Came back along the river with all the pretty xmas lights. Had our Christmas meal – sauted potatoes, chicken, stuffing, veg and gravy all done in our one pan on the gas ring:) Cards tonight – Phase 10 and Mag beat me!

Thursday 26th December – Boxing day – walk Cascades de Rouget****

We woke up to a foot of snow on the van and still falling very thickly! We laid in and read our books and eventually had breakfast. I went out in my onesie to take a photo of the snow plough coming to clear the car park! We did some more reading then I went and had a chat with our only neighbours who were right at the other end of the car park. A Scottish couple who have come for the whole season in their big white van. Apparently you can get a season (16 week) pass for 400 euros which when it costs over 40 every time you go is pretty good - you only have to go 10 times to be in profit! We had scrambled egg for lunch then while Mag cleared up and packed away, I put the snow chains on the van for the first time. It went really well and only took a few minutes which was a surprise. We drove up to the top of Sixt, which is probably more Savigny really. We parked in the car park for the Cascades de Rouget and did the wonderful walk which we have now done 3 times. Really thick snow with a track made up the middle of the path by someone pulling a sledge or similar. We walked up the longer road route to the Cascade which was as beautiful as usual and came back via the path through the woods. We went up that way the first time we did the walk but there was a horrendous scramble up rocks to the bridge at the end so we haven’t done it since. Luckily they have now re-routed the path and it was an easy and very beautiful way to come back – especially the wooden barn covered in snow in the middle of the trees:) It was hard going in the snow so our hour and a half away from the van must have done us some good – we were out of puff anyway! It still hasn’t stopped snowing! Drove away from Sixt and through Samoens back to Morrillon Lift car park for the night - ready for hopefully an early start to a great day skiing tomorrow. We had a drink and some of the little milk rolls toasted in the pan with jam and cream – like a cream tea! After a while we walked up to the village to the shop and along the main street as far as the church. We have only one other neighbour, the same camper as the other night with the bloomin generator! We moved to the completely opposite end of the car park so we cant hear it.
